Smart Energy Users

01 | our goal

What is the Smart Energy Users project about ?

We explore the evolving relationship between energy users and local energy systems in smart building environments.

Our research:

  • Investigates flexibility market structures and stakeholder dynamics
  • Examines willingness to join energy communities and pay for local renewables
  • Analyzes household energy practices to identify flexibility potential
  • Applies co-design methodology to address data-sharing preferences
  • Develops machine-learning algorithms to quantify flexibility uncertainty
  • Balances monetary/non-monetary incentives with willingness and capacity to change energy practices
  • Conducts real-world experiments combining social-technical interventions
  • Assesses system resilience during extreme events

03 | our Methods and interventions

Our research employs a multi-method approach to understand and enhance energy flexibility in smart building environments:

  • Mixed-methods fieldwork in living labs at building, district, and city scales to collect real-world usage data and behavioral insights
  • Co-design sessions with users to develop data-sharing frameworks that balance privacy concerns with system benefits
  • Experimental interventions testing both technological solutions and behavioral nudges
  • Machine learning analysis of consumption patterns to quantify flexibility potential with validated accuracy
  • Resilience stress-testing using simulated extreme events to ensure system stability

Our interdisciplinary team combines expertise in energy systems engineering, behavioral science, market design, and data analytics.
